Interior design is about more than creating beautiful rooms; it shapes how we feel in a space. Think for a moment about the contrast in feelings between walking into a beautiful Georgian drawing room, with high ceilings and big windows that fill the room with sunlight - soft pastel blues and elegant gold trim, compared to walking into an Art-Deco inspired cocktail bar, the deep green walls covered with bold golden scallop patterns paired with low moody lighting.

While both of these spaces offer an air of extravagance, the drawing room feels light, airy and relaxing, whereas the cocktail bar feels close, vibey and exciting.

How we decorate our space matters. As clients become more focused on wellbeing and emotional connection, design professionals are responding with intentional choices in texture, colour, and pattern.

Recent UK data shows that 71% of homeowners want their homes to feel “calm” or “restorative” (Houzz UK, 2024). This shift presents new opportunities to integrate nature-inspired patterns and textures into client projects.

Designing with Nature in Mind

At Teal House, each design is hand-illustrated, often using watercolour, ink or another artistic medium. Whatever way they come to life, my patterns are always inspired by the natural world and are drawn by hand. My collections lend themselves to soft furnishings, textiles, and interiors that feel grounded, personal, and calm, without relying on short-lived trends.

If you’re anything like me and find being outdoors restorative, it makes absolute sense why, as humans, we love to bring an essence of nature into the home, and this can evoke a sense of calm and comfort.

So, when we say "it feels like home", I really think it's a reflection on the spaces we design. Home, is a feeling we can create.
